Microdermabrasion

What is microdermabrasion?

A process using either aluminum oxide crystals or diamond heads and vacuum to remove the top layers of skin which are composed of dead skin cells. This is a medical technique used to treat dull or sundamaged skin, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles. It is also used to treat dark pigmentation and age spots.

Why should I pay for a professional treatment when I can buy a kit at the store?

There are store bought microdermabrasion kits available but these are limited in their ability to truly exfoliate and treat damaged skin. Experienced, trained technicians and their ability to determine skin type and who is and isn’t a candidate for this procedure are vital to achieving the best results.

How does the procedure work?

A machine and crystals are used by a technician to remove the top layers of skin. The amount of pressure used determines the level of abrasion. The variation of pressure allows the technician to effectively treat the problem being treated. The application of vacuum pressure to the skin surface increases blood flow to the skin encouraging release of toxins, oxygenation of skin cells and collagen/elastin realignment.

Should I have microdermabrasion prior to other treatments?

Microdermabrasion is an excellent start for other procedures being considered, such as chemical peels, intense pulsed light therapy, laser treatments. Microdermabrasion prepares the skin for these other treatments by sloughing off layers of dead skin cells that might act as a barrier reducing the effectiveness of other treatments.

What can I do to maintain the results from my treatment?

The best thing you can do to maintain your results is to use skin products that will continue to exfoliate (take off top layers of skin cells) your skin at home. These products will contain alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids. We will recommend a home regime at your consult. It is also important to get plenty of fluids and always use sunblock.
