About Laser Treatments
Any laser procedure can result in swelling, blistering, crusting, or flaking of the treated area, which may require one to three weeks to heal. Although rare, skin infection as well as hypopigmentation (lighter color) or hyperpigmentation (darker color) scarring can occur.
It is also recommended that the patient should avoid sun exposure for two weeks prior treatment, as well as for two weeks following treatment. All artificial tanning sprays should be discontinued two weeks prior to treatment.
IPL treatment is most successful for skin classifications of lighter skin types up to Fitzpatrick IV which will be determined by a skin chromotest during your consultation. IPL therapy targets both red and brown benign skin lesions or discolorations and significantly reduces or eliminates these lesions resulting in a more youthful and healthy appearance of the treated area. Prior to treatment, a topical anesthetic is used to minimize any discomfort that may result.
Alternative forms of treatment for benign pigmented skin lesions or solar lentigines are cryotherapy and sclerotherapy, but are limited in their use and may possibly produce scarring or hypopigmentation or white spots. Electrocautery is also an alternative treatment modality that can be used on facial vein but is not useful on small capillary vessels caused by Rosacea facial redness.
Sun exposure or artificial tanning (spray-on) should be avoided for at least 2 weeks prior and for at least 2 weeks after the treatment session.
Prior to treatment, the area must be cleaned and all make-up removed. Prior to treatment, a topical anesthetic is applied to the treatment area, to minimize any discomfort that may result. After the topical anesthetic has taken effect and the treatment area has been thoroughly cleaned, a clear, cool coupling gel is applied to the treatment area to assist in the effectiveness of the laser.
Following the treatment, cold packs can be used if the skin surface feels warm. Since the skin will be sensitive following the treatment, sunscreen cream should be applied to the treated areas for 2 weeks. Alternative and forms of hair removal (be it permanent or temporary) include waxing, tweezing, and electrolysis, which are more prone to cause skin damage and irritation.
