What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed today. The Long Pulse Nd:YAG Laser has been found to be both one of the most safe and effective methods of permanent hair reduction for most skin types.
What areas of the body can be treated with laser hair removal?
Most body areas can effectively be treated with the YAG laser. Although certain areas require special care, for example about the eyes, special shielding or protection is used to insure patient safety.
How does the procedure work?
The specific wavelength produced by the YAG laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle, known as melanin; so the darker the hair the more effective the treatment.
What kind of results can I expect?
Results vary with skin type and with the melanin content of the targeted hair. The treatment parameters can be finely tuned to provide the safest and most effective results possible.
Where is the procedure done and who does it?
At the Fountain of Youth Medical Spa, we proudly offer YAG laser treatments by appointment. The treatments are performed by our certified, skilled Registered Nurses or staff physicians.
How do I know if I am a good candidate for laser hair removal?
At the Fountain of Youth Medical Spa, we use a specialized tool called a chromotest to precisely determine your skin color classification. The more melanin or pigment in the targeted hair, the better the absorption of laser energy and, thus, the more effective the treatment will be. So, the lighter the skin and the darker the targeted hair, the better the treatment results. Laser hair treatment is most successful for skin classifications of lighter skin types up to Fitzpatrick IV which will be determined by a skin chromotest during your consultation.
Who should consider laser hair removal treatment?
Anyone who sincerely desires hair reduction/clearance, for a more healthy and youthful appearance of their skin.
What would keep me from being a good candidate for laser hair removal?
If you are a Type I diabetic, pregnant, have recently been exposed to the sun resulting in a sunburn, or you have used artificial tanning agents within the last several weeks we will not be able to do the procedure. If within the last six months you have taken photosensitive medications. If the treatment desired is over tattoos, over the extremities of diabetic patient’s with peripheral neuropathy, or over a suspicious skin lesion or infection, over superficially prevalent retained surgical hardware, or over a pace maker or similar device we are unable to do the procedure.
What should I expect when I come in for a consult?
Patients will be treated to a friendly, professional, and informative consultation with specific focus on their concerns. The recommended treatment or procedure will be explained and discussed in detail, and all of your questions will be answered.
What should I expect on the day of my appointment?
To be pampered and cared for with the utmost professionalism and hospitality. Prior to treatment, a topical anesthetic is used to minimize any discomfort that may result.
How much does laser hair removal cost?
See our reasonable laser hair removal areas and cost brochure for the cost of the specific area or areas you desire hair removal from. The staff will help guide and inform you in choosing the best treatment regimen for your particular problem.
What are some of the common side effects?
Any laser procedure can result in swelling, blistering, crusting, or flaking of the treated area, which may require 1 to 3 weeks to heal. Although rare, skin infection as well as hypopigmentation (lighter color) or hyperpigmentation (darker color) scarring can occur.
